“Why Can’t Marketers Talk Straight?”

13 Aug

Lots of people in advertising use really big words or flashy words. Sometimes, I see ads where I have no idea what a word in the headline means. And I feel stupid because I don’t know. So I ask others around me to see if it’s really just me. And they have no idea either. Shouldn’t ad agencies hire 12 year old kids to see if their ads pass the “this makes sense to everyone” test?

I’ve been to client meetings before and someone’s talking and I have no idea what they’re even talking about. They’re throwing lingo left and right and to top it all off, they’re layering on an insane amount of fluff. Whenever this happens, I feel inadequate not only as a presenter, but as an ad professional. But what I’ve never thought about is that if I, a person with almost 10 years of advertising experience and a degree from Brandcenter doesn’t get it, does the client? Do clients think, “wow, this person really knows their stuff because I have no clue what the fuck you’re talking about.”

My beliefs are simple:

1) Talk to the person like you would a friend. (If you acted like a used car salesman to your best friend, they would bitch slap you.)

2) Talk straight. (Name one person you know who loves bull shit.)

3) Do not shove data down their throat. (It’s a presentation or an ad, not math class.)

4) Watch their eyes. (If they’re dozing, change gears.)

5) Listen. (It’s amazing what happens when you shut up and listen.)

Eric Proulx’s “Lemonade”

7 Aug

Everybody is getting laid off in advertising these days. And there are no signs, the layoffs will stop any time soon.

Eric Proulx was a copywriter/ACD at the Arnold Worldwide headquarters in Boston. He was laid off in October and started a blog called Please Feed The Animals. His blog gives advice to newly laid off advertising victims and lets them guest blog. His blog has had a shit load of success and because of all of the support, he wanted to do more.

One thing became clear to him. The people who were laid off changed. Not for the worse, but for the better. They were doing things that would never have been possible if they were still working in advertising. Even changing their sex. This phenomenon got him to create a documentary called “Lemonade” about what’s happening and what happened to all of our fallen comrades.

Here’s a sneak peek:

Check out the “Lemonade” website to learn about more this incredible journey and movie.

Twitter is down!

Twitter is down

Twitter is down

I didn’t realize how much I used Twitter until today. Twitter is down and has been down for almost an hour. And not because there’s an overload of tweets. It’s not even pulling up. Was it hacked?

Whatever the reason is for Twitter being down, apparently based on Twitter’s status blog, they’re working on it.

Music from Jamaica

6 Aug

Everyone’s heard Beyonce’s “If I Were A Boy.” But have you heard Althea Hewitt’s version? This Jamaican singer did a really nice chill version of “If I Were A Boy.” What do you think?

I was listening to The Joint on Sirius this morning and heard this great Bob Marley & The Wailers song that I never heard before. It’s called “The Lord Will Make A Way Somehow.” I really dig it.

And be sure to listen to Buju Banton’s “Optimistic Soul.”

See how the rest of the world lives. Crash on their couches.

AirBnB

AirBnB

A year ago, a new website called AirBnb.com popped up. AirBnb.com lets people like you and me advertise our couches, beds, etc. as places to crash.

It’s a great idea for people who want to save money and are adventurous. What makes it really worthwhile are the rates people charge. You can stay in New York City for as little as $25 a night, a villa in Indonesia for $120 a night, or even a villa in Italy for $35. Click here to check out AirBnB.

Couch Surfing

If you’re want to travel, but you’re living paycheck to paycheck, consider Couch Surfing. Couch Surfing is an international program that lets you crash on people’s couches in over 230 countries and in return, you allow them to crash on your couch. It’s a really cool concept and I wish this had been around when I was in college. Click here to visit the Couch Surfing website to learn more.

Twibbon?

30 Jul

It seems like every day, Twitter is evolving–thanks to its huge success and all the people trying to jump on its coattails and make a quick buck.

Yesterday, I read you can now add links to the background of your Twitter profile page. And now, you can promote your cause over your Twitter profile picture with Twibbon. Twibbon currently has over 3,400 causes ranging from breast cancer, supporting our troops and even I love Donnie Wahlberg, who is actually really into Twitter (@DonnieWahlberg).

For each ribbon, you can see who created it and how many people believe in your cause. Besides Apple, I didn’t notice any big brands on here yet.

User Profile on Tischen

Tischen is a free site created by Saman Rahmanian, an art director at CP+B. Tischen lets your search for local help that are available right now for free.

Tischen is a beta and only works in NYC for now. Hopefully, more users join and see its simple user-friendly brilliance. Because I would love to use this in DC.

What I really dig about Tischen is it’s exactly what Craigslist would be if the site actually evolved. I use Craigslist a lot and whenever I do, I get so many responses every day. Sometimes, it’s takes forever to screen. What’s nice about Tischen is you get to see an actual photo of the person to make sure they’re not crazy. Users also share what services they offer, their training and experience, and then they pitch why you should hire them.

The site also shows a calendar for each user so you can see their availability today. Check out Tischen here. Or follow Saman Rahmanian on Twitter for some creative inspiration.

A beautiful and functional planner

28 Jul

It’s not surprising that a place that oozes creativity would feature one of the most beautiful planners I’ve ever seen. And what makes the MOMA’s new summer planner even more cool is the fact that it’s incredibly functional. It shows you everything you need to know to plan the ultimate trip to the MOMA–including exhibits, prices, etc. And it connects to your facebook profile so you can share it with friends. Click here to try out MOMA’s new summer planner.
