Craziness. I have a half-brother I never even knew existed.

15 Aug

Now that I know this, I’m going to put my search engine optimization skills to good use.

Ralph Herbert LeRoy Phillips

3 generations of Phillips' (Herbert, Ralph and my dad, Leroy)

I just found out I have a half-brother. And he’s white. (My siblings and I are mixed.) Apparently, my father, Leroy Clark Phillips, had a child before he met my mother and never mentioned it to her until after I was born. And she just mentioned it for the very first time yesterday. My half-brother would be older than my brother, who is now 36.

My father died in 1981. He was 41. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetary (between Bradley & MacArthur). Sometimes when my family visitsmy father at Arlington National Cemetary, there are flowers there. I never knew where they came from. Maybe they were placed there by my half-brother.

Now that we know a half-brother exists, my siblings and I would like to meet him–if he is interested. I am hoping one day he googles Leroy Clark Phillips, Leroy Phillips, or Leroy C. Phillips and sees this blog.

Facts about Leroy Clark Phillips:

-Born on September 17, 1940
-He died when he was 41
-He was born in California
-He served 20 years in the Navy as a cryptologist
-He was working for the American Red Cross in DC when he died
-He is buried at Arlington National Cemetary (between Bradley & MacArthur)

Hopefully, one day he stumbles on this. I’ll be waiting.

Ready for product check-ins?

27 Jul

foursquare mytown

With the success of Foursquare and MyTown, it was only a matter of time before someone figured out a way for users to get even more points. And kudos to MyTown for coming up a way to make marketers and users happy at the same time. Their app has new updates that include product check-ins.

Product check-ins? Yep, now users can use their iPhone camera and scan bar codes on products to unlock points and cash reward items. iTouch users can also check-in by typing in the bar codes.

With all those eyeballs paying close attention to your bar codes, it makes you think twice about the standard bar code. Will companies start investing toward redesigning them? Will they start advertising messages next to them? Or will they simply pass up this opportunity to join in on the social gaming experience?

The iPad is more exciting than the birth of a child?

23 Jul

This is what I discovered when I went into labor with our second child. We had just received the iPad three days earlier and my husband was stoked. He played with it every free moment he had. And I knew it was cool, but I had no idea it would be more exciting than the birth of your child until the day Stella was born.

I had a difficult labor. By the time Stella arrived, I had labored for nearly 22 hours. And throughout the ordeal, the iPad seemed to overpower the experience. In the early hours when my contractions were 7 minutes apart, my husband used the iPad to check the World Cup scores for the South Korea vs. Greece game. By the evening, when I was dialated nearly 8 cm and in excruciating pain, instead of holding my hand and comforting me during each contraction, my husband was cradling the iPad.

I yelled at him that I would burn the iPad if he didn’t shut it down and focus on what was going on. I couldn’t believe he would marvel at the freaking iPad more than the birth of our daughter. After Stella finally arrived, he spent the evening playing with apps and surfing. Then my husband turned himself into an Apple salesmen. And for the next two days while we were in the hospital, I watched him give iPad demos over and over and over again to every nurse and doctor that walked into the room. Each pitch lasted at least 10 minutes. It was unbelievable. And each time, he sold everyone. Every time the nurses and doctors returned, they asked more questions about the iPad and its functionality.

This whole ordeal got me thinking about user experiences versus real experiences. I guess we’re living in a time where if the user experience is that great and that awesome, it can rival the experience of even the most precious and intimate human experiences. It’s sad, but true.

Two-Year-Old Smokes 40 cigarettes a day

27 May

Seriously? Parents in Indonesia started letting their toddler smoke when he was 18-month-old. Now he’s addicted. And he smokes at least 40 a day. If he doesn’t get the cigarettes, he throws a tantrum and bangs his head into the wall. So what? I would let them bang away.

The government is willing to give the family a car if they can get their son to quit smoking. But the dad thinks he’s okay. WTH! Check out this toddler puff away. Looks like he’s been smoking for years.

Digital Creative Brief written by a copywriter

14 May

If how we advertise has changed, because of new technology, social media, and the active role users continue to play, shouldn’t the creative brief change, too?

I mean, don’t you think that there are some fundamental questions that aren’t being asked and important insight about users that we’re missing? You might have research that tells you I’m an educated working mom who is super busy. But you probably don’t have enough research on my social currency. What if your brand lets me down in some way, do you know if I will tweet about it, blog about it or maybe share my experience on Facebook? Do you know how you want me to interact with your message?

And why would you even think about recycling a traditional creative brief into a digital one? Fundamentally, their core is the same: sell something. But just because you put the file size requirements and what sites the banners for example will appear on doesn’t make it a digital brief. There are differences.

I took a stab at writing a creative brief for the digital age. It’s a start, to hopefully encourage agencies to start asking more relevant questions that can hopefully generate better user experiences. I’m not a brand planner, so I’m sure there are things that could be better or asked in a more insightful way. But I wanted to at least throw some new questions out that could potentially change the way briefs are written nowadays.

Also, I found this nice slide show by Gareth Kay, Director of Digital Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Check it out.

Update: This is sad. I just googled “digital creative brief” on 8/16/2010 and this post pulls up on the first page of the search results. Guess it’s an even bigger problem than I realized. Shouldn’t more people be talking about digital creative briefs?

Electric banjos rock!

28 Apr

I just heard “Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons the other day on my Sirius. I had never heard of this British band before. I really love the electric banjo and the overall lyrics and sound. Check it out.

If you dig their sound, here’s “Winter Winds.”

Kim Haller, a Korean-inspired Illustrator

14 Apr

Kim Haller is a Korean-born, Wisconsin-raised illustrator who I recently discovered on Etsy. I really love her characters–especially since many of them are Korean-inspired and feature bright colors, traditional hanbok dresses and even the delicious rice candy wrapper.  Her kid characters are not only whimsical, they really capture the imagination and purity of children. Best of all, her artwork is affordable. Each print is only $20.

Support her work and show some love. Check out her store called KIL.SOOK on Etsy.
