WTH. My sister-in-law just joined Facebook last week.

And the only reason she joined was to check out pictures of her friend’s baby. I couldn’t believe I actually know someone my age (33) who wasn’t connected or using any social media; she hasn’t joined Twitter, YouTube, or Flickr either. Heck, she only has a hotmail account and it’s the same one from college.

It just blows my mind that she’s been able to function without any social media. To be disconnected to that level like it’s 1997 is just crazy to me. I asked her how she survived so long without it. She said she emails or calls people. Imagine that.

Will Facebook change her? Will she call her friends less? Will she start sharing her life through status updates? Will she become closer with her friends? Will she and I become closer? It will be interesting to see how Facebook changes her life.

I guess that depends on the person, but for me, facebook ironically took away from my social life. I was using those statuses and reading everyone else’s- those insignificant details in your life and on-impulse ideas that pop up. I didn’t receive a phone call from anyone is over two years, and chatting through wall posting made it so my friends and I didn’t really have anything to say to each other face-to-face anymore. I took the dare and deactivated facebook. I must say it has been the best decision I have ever made.

Although facebook has allowed to connect with friends I would otherwise have lost, I can be a human being again.

I can’t believe you’re considered human as soon as you walk away from Facebook 🙂

I know plenty of people that would agree with every word you said. And I hope you’re documenting your journey. It would be awesome to read about your withdraws (if you have any) and your journey to becoming human again.

BTW, do you believe there’s a way to be on Facebook and still be human? Just curious.
