Social Networking is the next big thing

2 May

Marketing are paying close attention to how huge Myspace.com–a social networking site with more than 66 million registered users–has grown. Social networking sites let users get together and share their passions for hours. And now because of the incredible popularity of myspace.com, marketers everywhere are building their own social sites. But these kinds of sites come with some risk. To be successful, companies have to give up a certain amount of control. Some sites must be monitored closely for foul language and graphic images that could hurt the brand. And if you try to control the content, you run the risk of damaging the brand.

Here are some of the more popular branding social sites.

Created three years ago, Mycoke.com is a social networking site that is upfront about using live moderators, previews and filters to stop offensive words. You would think that this kind of monitoring would turn people off, but it’s not. On average, more than 8 million people spend 5 hours every month on the site. Here, users can chat about their favorite bands, share music, upload videos, and write about music. They can even post under “vergos.” For those of you have never been to the site, that’s a pseudonym for a virtual ego. They can also earn points to purchase Coke products.

The USA Network created the theme “Characters Welcome” last year to promote “Monk.” In this community, user chat and share videos, photos and profiles. They also had contests where viewers uploaded videos of their quirky talents. The winner got to make a USA Network commercial and star in an online series.

Nike launched joga.com for all of the World Cup enthusiasts. Here, users can chat or blog in 14 languages as well as post videos and pictures. A Nike spokesperson claims it is is the first social networking site for sports enthusiasts.

Kohl’s recently launched transformationnation.com–damn, that’s long. This site wants users to share stories about something that has transformed their lives.

Kodak has has added a new cool feature to its site. Previously, the site showcased thousands of photos in a gallery. Now users can upload five pictures that will then appear in a commerical online using a four-step process coined “just as easy”. When the commerical is completed, users can email the spot to friends and families and 10 free prints are offered to them to get them to sign for Kodak’s online photo services.

Launched with an ad featuring the social networking site during the Academy Awards, USBC’s yourpointofview.com lets users share their thoughts about news events and trends.

If you know of other popular social networking sites, please share.

Nintendo Wii

28 Apr

At long last, Nintendo is breaking from free the demands of the mainstream and out of the shadows of its competition. Lots of folks are talking about Nintendo Wii and so far it’s getting good reviews from hardcore gaming fans. In case you haven’t heard about it yet, Wii is the next console revolution for Nintendo. And in case you have no idea how to pronounce it, Wii sounds like “we.”

What happens when MySpace users die?

27 Apr

Posted on the home page of mydeathspace.com, it states:

“Only three things are certain in life. MySpace, Taxes, and Death.

If you have a MySpace account and you die, this is where you will end up. “

Apparently, it is possible to take social networking websites to a whole new level. And mydeathspace.com is just the site to do it. It’s a disturbing and morbid online memorial honoring dead myspace members. And I can’t believe it’s real. As of today, there are 119 dead my space members posted on it. Who knows what’s in store for this site?

wes anderson is still a genius.

26 Apr

we’ve all seen his movies, and the ads he’s done for IKEA and Dasani. now, wes anderson is back, riding the celebrities-who-heart-their-AMEX-cards campaign, along with fellow director m. night shyamalan, kate winslet and robert deniro, as well as a ton of other hollywood names. this spot is classic wes and might just be enough to tide me over until his next film comes out.

Ricky Gervais has a podcast

26 Apr

Our hero from the British version of “The Office” (and the mildly entertaining “Extras” on HBO) has a podcast. Apparently there are already 12 episodes. I just read about it in the New York Times. I’m so with it, learning about a six-month-old podcast by reading it in the slowly dying medium of the newspaper.

I have no idea if this is even good or not. I’m just downloading it now.

Okay. I just saw one episode and it’s pretty funny. Random and low-fi and kind of what you’d expect, but funny. In fact it starts with a radio ad he wrote for Prostate Cancer Awareness. Interesting to know he writes ads…

Alfred the Little Bear

25 Apr

I think I’m the only one that’s going to find this interesting.

(Insert wiseass comment from Don here)

But upon eliz’s invite to join the blog, I was asked to login. Apparently I already had a blogger account. I’m not surprised I had an account that I didn’t remember. I do that a lot on sites where I need info fast: join up then forget all about it after. But the really interesting thing about my Blogger login was the screen name I chose: “Alfred the Bear.” Man, I hadn’t thought about him in a long time and his name must’ve just flashed in my head when I originally joined—you see, Alfred the Bear was one of my favorite stories as a kid. He was in a series of books in fact. And, surprise, surprise after a google search I found the photographer of the Alfred books has a site. So here it is folks. Sit back, regress and enjoy Alfred the Little Bear. Just click on the link above.
