Don’t make the same mistakes I did with your student loans

Student loans

For many underprivileged students like I once was, student loans are a way to pursue higher education so you can change your life for the better.

But when you graduate with the excess debt, many student–including myself–don’t truly understand money and loans and how repayment works. Further, many students don’t even know how much they owe, what their interest rate is or do enough research on student loan repayment companies. You see, most of us graduated with Federal Student Loans and we’re not entirely sure what we’re supposed to do. Herein lies the problem and it’s a big problem that will impact your life for 10-30+ years depending on the amount.

I graduated in 2001 with a Master’s degree and accumulated $60,000 in student loans. At the time, the feds were charging almost 8% interest and for the first time in history, loan companies were offering dramatically lower interest rates. So I received some direct mail piece, called the number and decided to transfer my student loans to ACS. This single move would cause more stress than anything I have ever experienced in my life.

ACS offered me 5.75% interest and my repayments were going to be $400 for 30 years. It was a hard number to swallow. And stupid me at the time, I sucked at money and didn’t understand that this was way off. (Note: I just called ACS today on 3/16/2010 and asked the customer service rep how much would the payment be for a $60,000 loan with 5.75% for 30 years, she said $166. So why was I being forced to pay $400 is beyond me!)

When the repayments began, I just found a job and wasn’t making much money. So when I called and told them my situation and they said I could do a forbearance for 6 months. So I agreed. 6 months later when I started making my payment, my student loans went from $60,000 to almost $67,000. That’s over $1,000 a month!!

I was mad, but felt like I was trapped. When you consolidate, you can’t transfer your loans and you’re stuck. So for 5+ years, I sucked it up made $400 a month payments. In 5 years, I paid $24,000 and out of that $18,000 went to interest. Yes, $18,000!

Then about 2 years ago, my husband received a postcard from CFS (Collegiate Funding Service) about consolidating and I called and asked if there was any way I could consolidate my loans with his. I figured any way I could escape the clutches of ACS I would take. They said I couldn’t and then informed me of a loophole that Bush opened up. For the first time ever, students could transfer their loans to another loan company. I couldn’t believe it. Then I called Sallie Mae and they too confirmed it. So I hustled like it was no one’s business and in less than a week sent my loans to CFS. They offered me a benefit rate of 4.5% for making direct deposit payments and 2 years of on-time payments). Thank god, I hustled because less than 2 weeks later, the loophole closed.

Now get this. When I spoke with CFS, I explained that in 5+ years and $400 payments, I owed $60,000. Funny, how that was the original loan amount I graduated from school with. She crunched some numbers and told me if I continued to pay $400 a month, my loans would be paid off in 19 years–not 30 years! And I saved over $70,000 in interest. You have no idea how much I cried.

2 years later, CFS was sold to Chase and my loans have gone from $60,000 to $50,800. (I sent in a little extra some months) How in the hell do you explain that? In 2 years, I shaved off almost $10,000 and when I had ACS for 5 years, I barely shaved off $7,000. WTH!

So you can imagine my surprise when 2 weeks ago, I received a letter from Chase saying my loan has been sold to you won’t believe it, but ACS. Can you believe it? So of course I am worried and scared that something bad is about to happen.

I spent almost an hour on the phone with Chase yesterday begging for some kind of documentation of my benefits rate so I have something in case ACS tries to take advantage of me. They are sending me a document in a week.

I just called ACS today and she (Nicole) said when my Chase student loans are transferred, they will honor the 4.5% interest rate and my payment schedule and amount shouldn’t change. But only time will tell.

The lesson: research, research, research. Know what you owe, how long you will owe for it and ask for the fine print. And whatever you do, do not ever consolidate with ACS. Call me crazy, but check out all these complaints regarding ACS.  Their stories and experiences are not only scary, but sad. I totally understand their stress and feel bad for them. Here are even more ACS student loan complaints. Here is a class action lawsuits against ACS.

No one can protect yourself from loan companies like ACS so your best course of action is to just avoid them entirely and know everything you can about your student loans so you never get taken advantage of like the way I did.

Here’s a great article about how a mother and her daughter got in over their heads with student loan debt. Remember, the profession you choose is more important than the name of the college you attend. Know what your potential earning salary is and then decide whether it’s worth it to invest tens of thousands of dollars toward it.
P.S. Future student should pray that President Obama’s student loan plan where the government becomes the source for student loans and not commercial lenders passes. At least, we could hold the government accountable if they tried to screw innocent kids over.

UPDATE: As of March 2013, I paid off my student loans. Yippee. I am free from ACS! See how I paid off my ACS student loans here.

PUPPP rash is pure evil and hell on Earth

15 Mar

If you don’t know what Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy or aka PUPPP is, consider yourself lucky. Real lucky. Because it is a beast of a rash that affects 1% of pregnant women. PUPPP rash is no ordinary rash. It makes poison ivy look like a joke. No, PUPPP rash is a horrific rash that’s part wildfire, part incessant itching, and part “I want to rip my flesh off.”

The worst part about PUPPP rash? No one really knows what causes it and there’s no cure. Sure, there’s a lot of theories out there. From first-time mothers to boy babies are the root cause to skin cells to its genetic and inherited from the father, but really, no one has a clue and perhaps that is what makes it truly hell on earth.  All I can say is, those theories about it being only common in first-time moms with boys is bull. I had it at 36 weeks with my son. It was tolerable. After his birth, it spread like a crazy wildfire all over my entire body. I had to be put on topical and oral steroids.  I am now 25 weeks pregnant with a girl and so I just threw that theory out the window

As far as help for PUPPP, here’s what almost every website says to try:

  1. Benedryl.
  2. Grandpa’s Pine Tar soap. (just ordered some, will let you know after I’ve tried it)
  3. V-8 Vegetable Juice (I bought some today and after one glass I noticed I wasn’t itching as much. But the effects wore off after a couple of hours.)
  4. Creams, Aloe, and Lotions. (I put some Aveeno fragrance-free oatmeal lotion when I got home. I haven’t itched for over 3 hours. I also put a frozen bag of veggies on my belly for 20 minutes before putting the lotion on. I noticed the swelling has gone down tremendously and it’s not as red, but instead a light pink color.
  5. Steroids. I don’t feel comfortable with this idea while I’m pregnant. Although, I’ve only had PUPPP for 2 days now. If it got as crazy as it did with my son and my whole body gets on fire, I am sure I will change my mind.
  6. Dandelion root tea. I saw it at Whole Foods today and was going to buy it until I saw it had a warning for pregnant woman and thought I should get more info about it first.

Update: My obgyn is so packed I wasn’t able to get an appointment for over a week. So I went to a dermatologist specialist instead. Apparently, I don’t have PUPPP. Instead, I have a contact allergy. Something that I’m allergic to physically touched my belly. And he said it wasn’t detergent or shampoo. He said he could tell right away it wasn’t PUPPP, because of the color. While my skin was red, the rash had some white pimples scattered throughout. He said white pimples are not a characteristic of PUPPP’s and instead it denoted a bacterial infection.

They prescribed me Clobestasol 50% and I’m supposed to apply it twice a day for 2 weeks. The first day I put it on, it still burned a little, but not much. By the next morning, it didn’t burn at all. But I did some research on Clobestasol and what I found scared me. Clobestasol is a Class C pregnancy drug, which means it hasn’t be tested properly or studied enough on pregnant women. In lab animals they tested, it did cause some birth defects. WTH!

So here’s my routine:

  • Apply a super thin layer of Clobestasol in the morning
  • Take lukewarm showers at night with Grandpa’s Pine Tar soap. (Which by the way is the foulest smelling soap ever created)

Doing this seems to work. I don’t have any burning sensation. And it looks like it is healing. I will post pictures shortly.

I CAN SAVE TRAPPED HAITIANS NOW! WE ALL KNOW SOMEBODY THAT KNOWS SOMEBODY.  GET ME ON A SHIP! TRAPPED SURVIVERS HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME.  I’M A FORMER MARINE, CARRY A VALID PASSPORT, AND HAVE A RARE new 20 TON MACHINE THAT CAN SAVE LIVES.

I’m completely self sufficient, have disaster experience and can be wherever I need to be within 8 hours of a phone call.

I’m VOLUNTEERING my services for as long as I can fund and sustain myself. I have enough supplies to sustain for one month, including:

  • satellite phone (satellite service)
  • 3g laptop (Verizon Service)
  • cell phone (AT&T)
  • antibiotics
  • first aid
  • diesel
  • water
  • food

  • tarps

I‘m a father of 4, first aid and CPR certified, physically fit ½ marathon runner, and have my own company. I’m running into red tape. I want to get on a ship NOW. I can save lives. I’m very good at what I do, and have the equipment to do it with no support from anyone. Only 1 other person may accompany me; so 2 personnel, 1 excavator/bull dozier (see photo below). DON’T tell me no. Please get me on a ship, or a large aircraft that can handle 20 tons, approximately 40,800 pounds.

Sponsors are welcome once we’re on the ground to sustain us for longer durations. I’m prepared to be in Haiti for at least 6 months. I don’t want any money until I run out of my own funds in about a month. This is my calling, I want to help!

2010: The Year of the White Tiger

7 Jan

My aunt just emailed me from South Korea to congratulate us on our upcoming baby. She said lots of couples are trying to get pregnant and have a baby this year, because 2010 is the year of the White Tiger and it only comes along once every 60 years.

In Korea, they are especially excited about babies born this year, because the White Tiger is a national symbol featured on their flag. Many people believe that babies born during the year of the White Tigers will become wealthy and powerful and will be born with an extraordinary amount of potential.

There is also a local legend in Korea about four guardian gods in the shape of animals. The first is the chungryong (blue dragon). Then there’s the hyunmu (turtle-snake), Next is the  jujak (phoenix). And finally, there’s baekho (white tiger). While the first three gods are fictional characters, the White Tiger is the only real animal, which is why they are so highly respected. And because actually seeing a real White Tiger is like one in a million, many believe its rarity makes it a good sign.

So what’s so special about the White Tiger, besides the fact that it’s rare? What makes babies born in 2010 so special is the fact they are normally Metal Tigers, but they will also be White Tigers–which is extra special.

The White Tiger Personality

In general, tigers are difficult to resist, because of their magnetic and charming personalities. They are a mixture of calmness, generosity, and courageousness. Tigers enjoy the unpredictability of life and are never scared to explore new things. In fact, they prefer first-hand experiences. Tigers do not enjoy being trapped in a situation and can become aggressive if they find themselves in that situation. And Tigers tend to trust their instincts. White Tigers get irritated very easily, but unlike other Tigers, they are able to hold in their frustrations to themselves for awhile before losing it.

The White Tiger In Love

Tigers are sensitive and emotional and can sometimes become too intense when they are in love. While they are capable of being passionate, they can be territorial and possessive. Tigers are never afraid to express their feelings. Their best partner is someone who is committed and can quietly pursue their own plans in life.

The White Tiger’s Career Path

Tigers are always in a hurry to get things done right, so they prefer to work alone. They are hard-working by nature and will work with enthusiasm and efficiency. They are optimistic and full of determination. The Tigers’ drive makes it difficult for them to deal well with failure. They are natural born leaders.

The best career paths for Tigers are: Company director, Stunt person, Explorer, Military officer, Politician, Stockbroker, Writer, Designer, Athlete, or Movie Star.

For Father’s Day this year, I bought my husband the Nike South Korean World Cup soccer shirt. It features a white tiger and thought it was the perfect gift. Nike still has some of the white tiger South Korean soccer shirt. If you want one, click here.

Richmond, CA

Picture 33

When you’re in high school, all everyone wants is to fit in. But how far would you go to fit in?

For me, this played a part in what happened that terrible night in Richmond, California. A vulnerable, churchgoing 15-year-old girl tries to fit in and please her school’s bad boys. Her desire to fit in and be accepted made her unwilling to pay attention to her surroundings. She was too innocent and too trusting. Aren’t most 15-year-olds?

It has been almost two weeks since I first heard the news about the horrific gang rape that took places at a high school in Richmond, California. I am still traumatized by this, because I can’t believe:

a) this happened at a high school in America

b) up to 20 people watched, laughed and took pictures with their camera phones

c) that up to 10 people raped her for over 2 hours

As I learn more about the event, it’s sad that she was actually heading home and was calling for a ride when a friend did something that changed her life forever. He got her drunk off brandy. One man asked for sex. She said no, punched him in the nuts. He flipped out and punched her. Then they formed a train and raped her. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Sometimes with foreign objects.  And when they were done, the rapists and the crowd left her naked next to a dumpster.

Listen to the 9-1-1 call from a brave girl.

So far 4 have been arraigned.

Donations for the Richmond High School rape victim may be sent to: Richmond High Jane Doe, account No. 041-30-1188, Mechanics Bank, 3170 Hilltop Mall Road, Richmond, CA 94806.

Or send cards to Jane Doe, care of Richmond High School, 1250 23rd St., Richmond, CA 94804-1011 checks out to the Richmond High Student Fund, with “For sex assault victim” written in the memo line.

The victim has a long road ahead of her, but she sounds like a strong person who is still optimistic and believes this world can be a good place.

Free Portfolio Site for Web Designers, Copywriters, Art Directors, Photographers and Creative Types

21 Oct

I posted about free portfolio sites earlier this year and would like to continue to post ideas to help out. Lots of people are getting laid off. Lots of people are on unemployment and money is tight. So if you’re looking for a free portfolio website, consider WordPress.

WordPress is a great content management system (CMS) so for those people who don’t know code, you can easily make the changes yourself.

Plus, several designers are offering free portfolio-theme templates so you can easily showcase your work. So if you don’t know code, don’t worry. And if you hate all of the examples, just pick any of WordPress’ free templates on their site, because you can upload jpegs of your work into any WordPress template–not just these free portfolio themes.

Please note that when you use a free portfolio theme, you must give the creator of the theme because of the creative commons license.

1. PORTFOLIO. So far, it seems like the best free WordPress portfolio theme available. It organizes the work and has an area for you to write the client, URL, and a little description. Download it here.

Why Twitter is changing the world.

21 Oct

Some considered Twitter a fad earlier this year. Today, it is a force to be reckoned with.

Twitter’s estimate worth is $1 billion. In February 2008, Twitter was hovering around 475,000 users. eMarketer did research earlier this year and estimated there would be 18 million users by the end of 2009. They were way off! By the end of August 2009, there were 27 million users. And there are no signs it is slowing down any time soon. With Google and Bing adding Tweets to the search results, it means Twitter is here to stay.

How will Twitter deal with the mass number of tweets and maintain Twitter so it’s accessible? At any given time so many people are tweeting, it’s common to see this image when you are trying to tweet.

Twitter is over capacity

Twitter is over capacity

And as of today, October 20, 2009, Twitter surpassed 5 billion tweets.

So what are people tweeting about? Someone are talking about themselves. This group of “Meformers” makes up roughly 80% of Twitter users according to a study done by Rutgers University. Meformers generally post updates their everyday lives, feelings, and thoughts. The remaining 20% of users are known as “Informers” and they like sharing information and usually include links to their sources.

The Rutgers research determined 9 different types of tweets:

  1. information sharing (i.e. 5 WordPress plug-ins to try out + URL)
  2. self promotion (i.e. Check out Arnold DC’s latest work +URL)
  3. opinions and complaints (i.e. I love Amtrak!!) Best person to follow on Twitter for this is @shitmydadsays
  4. statements and random thoughts (i.e. Ever wonder why dogs like cat food so much?)
  5. me now (i.e. Enjoying a margarita after a long day)
  6. question to followers (i.e. When is the economy going to turn around?)
  7. presence maintenance (i.e. Good Morning everyone. Miss me?)
  8. self-referential anecdotes (i.e. “My kid poured spaghetti sauce all over me. Twice!”)
  9. anecdotes about others (i.e. “Can’t believe @username woke up early to jog. It was 40 degrees!”)

So why are so many people joining Twitter?

Personally, I think when Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) battled CNN to become the first one on Twitter to have 1 million followers, it got people wondering what Twitter was all about. The battle was all over the news. Ultimately, Ashton smoked CNN. After the challenge, you can see a huge surge in the number of people joining.

Ashton’s stunt isn’t the only thing that has made people join. Others have joined because of the impact Twitter is starting to have on our lives. For example:

  1. Twitter helped people understand what was happening in Tehran and Iran after they had their recent election. Twitter became the way how Iranians communicated with the rest of the world.
  2. Twitter is creating news. It’s the pulse of what’s on people’s minds. And it’s often told later on the evening news. Every second, the trending topics show you what the most popular topics are.
  3. It’s one of the first places people and companies break news.
  4. Shaq and other players were tweeting from the bench–until the NBA banned tweeting from the bench.
  5. Share experiences in real-time with the world. Tweet while you’re at a concert or out shopping. Give minute-by-minute play. When President Obama came to Manassas, Virginia the night before the election, he was supposed to speak at Nissan Pavilion. But he was late. He tweeted the whole way there (i.e. at Dulles airport, stuck in traffic on I-66). I remember the newscasters relying on his tweets to know his whereabouts.
  6. Hate waiting on hold? Many companies are using their Twitter accounts for customer service. Speak with a person and get answers or directed to someone who will help. Home Depot and Geek Squad are two examples.
  7. See things you would never have seen before. Astronaut Mike Massimino (@Astro_Mike) actually tweeted pics from space on the shuttle. Lance Armstrong tweeted pics from the hospital when his baby was born earlier this year.
  8. Twitter is helping brands connect with consumers on a whole new level. As an example, there have already been 3 million tweets about the Ford Fiesta. And in April, Ford CEO Alan Mulally answered questions on Twitter. One consumer was undecided after doing a second test drive. Mulally personally called him and won the consumer over.

If you’re not on Twitter yet and want to, but don’t understand how it works. Here’s a few tips to get you started.

YOU WANT TO: Acknowledge someone, publicly talk to someone
HOW: Put a @ before their user ID
EXAMPLE: @quinonesanibal Really nice follow up to milliondollarhomepage.com http://bit.ly/1R4bnT

YOU WANT TO: Retweet something cool that someone wrote
HOW: Put a RT before you paste their message.
EXAMPLES: RT @leeclowsbeard Dear jr. (or sr.) team: Before whining about not getting good work produced, try showing some first.
Really nice video. RT @Vejvoda: Did You Know 4.0 – Fascinating, The Economist does it again. http://bit.ly/2LAr7F

YOU WANT TO: PUT A HASHTAG (aka tag your tweet)
HOW: Put a # before the hashtag you would like to use
EXAMPLES: “The purpose of a business is to create a customer who creates customers for you. ” -Peter Drucker #ims09
Bring Tracy Morgan to Twitter. http://twacy.org “Tell her that you want her privates and your privates to do a high five.” -TM #twacy

YOU WANT TO: POST A URL, BUT IT’S FREAKIN’ LONG. HOW: Paste the URL in BIT.LY first. This site shrinks your URL from 50 characters to around 7.

YOU WANT TO: WRITE SOMETHING, BUT IT’S TOO LONG
HOW: Don’t be afraid of using “&” for “and” or “2” for “to” or leaving off punctuation.
Example: It’s nice outside. I ran 2 the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument & the Mall this AM. Check out this crazy bird. http://twitpic.com/56748

This Creative Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

9 Oct

I remember learning about the creative revolution when I was at Brandcenter. I always wondered what it must have been like to have lived through it. And lately, I find myself thinking about people  like Bill Bernbach, Phyllis Robinson and all the other ad legends who helped shape the creative revolution. Were they nervous about the unknown? Excited about the possibilities? Frustrated with people who were in denial of the change that was happening?

Now that we’re in a creative revolution, I feel what they probably felt. And that is a little of everything, but mostly pure exhilaration. Being in the beginning of a creative revolution and working in advertising is pretty amazing these days.  From mobile apps, augmented reality, social media and the amazing breakthroughs in technology, the world and the way information is delivered  is changing every day. And the possibilities, well, we’re just scratching the surface.

As the world evolves with the exploding development of social technology, a few things have become clear to me:

1. Evolve or die. Any agency who refuses to do this will perish. It is not the 80’s. It is 2009. And a print campaign cannot solve everything anymore. Audiences are segmented and you must be willing to consider mediums and platforms that you are not familiar with and be okay with it. Open your mind and be creative.

2. Fuck so-called experts. We’re in a creative revolution and we’re all learning. Claiming to be an expert means you’re closing your mind to more possibilities and you believe you’ve achieved the highest level of understanding. You may know a lot. But no one in the revolution is an expert; we’re all students.

3. Everyone has a voice. Your customers. Your employees. Your family. Nowadays if you piss anyone off, your brand or agency or name is fair game. It can and probably will get slaughtered publicly on forums, comment posts on blogs and social networks. Don’t assume it’s like the good old days when people just talked shit behind your back. Today, people talk shit about other people publicly to the entire world wide web. Which reminds me, it’s probably good to have a crisis management plan for when the shit hits the fan.

4. Promote collaboration. We live in a time when it’s no longer cool to be a one-man show. Ideas require collaboration to bring them to life. From developers, QA, information architects, art directors, copywriters, producers, designers, illustrators… there are a shit load of people who must work together and often, in different offices or remotely. Do yourself a favor, promote collaboration and strong teamwork. Don’t be a tool and treat developers like monkeys or nobody’s. Same goes for anyone on your team. You want respect? You gotta dish it to receive it. And if you don’t believe me, just know that these other members of your team who you take for granted who hate your fucking arrogant guts.

5. Love the process. Mark Fenske used to say this. And it’s true more than ever. Today, the process creates headaches, fights, computer related eye strain, carpel tunnel syndrome, beta testing, wire frames, etc. It can be complicated and frustrating. But that’s because every project is a learning curve.  So you gotta love the process in order to get the idea to not only come to life, but blow users’ minds.

Spoken word about creating and keeping knowledge

Really amazing.
