Bisphenol A — What in the world is this crazy chemical?

13 Jul

Bisphenol A, also commonly known as BPA has been making headlines around the world this year. I know I certainly started to pay attention when the Canadian government decided to ban all BPA baby bottles and Walmart in Canada pulled all their BPA baby bottles off the shelf in April of this year. My friends had been sending me articles, but it really wasn’t until that ban that I wanted to know what in the world is Bisphenol A aka BPA.

Well it’s a chemical commonly found in polycarbonate plastic bottles and epoxy resins. It’s been used for 50 years to make commerce items like baby bottles and water bottles. Can you believe it? And epoxy is used in the lining of many food items, including baby formula and drink cans.

Now that you know how many things contain Bisphenol A or BPA, what happens when a product contains it?

Some serious stuff can occur–especially if used long term. There was a consensus statement provided by 38 of the leading BPA expert last year about BPA and its effects. And what was concluded is the following:

Average levels in humans are more harmful than in other animals that were tested in lab experiments. Yikes!

And the National Institute of Health believes there is “some concern” about Bisphenol A or BPA’s effects on fetal and infant brain development and behavior.

There have been low dose studies done on lab animals like rats to show what some of Bisphenol A or BPA’s effects are. Here are a few of the findings:

-Breast cells are actually more predisposed to developing cancer
-Changes in breast tissue which then are more predisposed to developing cancer and other carcinogens
-Permanent changes to genital tracts
-Lower bodyweight
-Early puberty
-Decline in testicular testosterone
-Prostate cells more sensitive to cancer

I know it’s scary to realize that Bispehnol A or BPA is used in many baby items, which are things babies use daily like baby formula–it’s found in the plastic lining–and baby bottles.

How can you avoid them?

Simple. Buy BPA-free EVERYTHING. That’s what this blog is about. I love researching. So I’ll show you where you can find Bisphenol A or BPA-free produts. So all of our babies can grow up healthy and avoid this horrific chemical.

P.S. The tadpole picture above is actually a tadpole that was given Bisphenol A. Creepy, huh?
